Why do I need an irrigation system? - Part One...Sandy Soils

I’m not sure anyone NEEDS an irrigation system, but they are almost ESSENTIAL in certain situations…

Sand - this is what most of us have for soil since we live near the shores of Lake Huron.

Sand is highly porous, has high drainage rates, and does not absorb water effectively. Without adequate watering your plant roots don’t really stand a chance at absorbing the required moisture and nutrients. You’re basically asking the roots to grab the water as it races by rather than allowing it to slowly soak up water and nutrients that would sit in other soil types.

As seen above, the large sand grains create larger spaces between them allowing water to run through easily and quickly. This limits water storage for plant roots.

Comparable water storage capabilities for different soil types are shown on the right.

You can reduce the loss of sod and plants by making sure they receive water when they need it the most and at appropriate intervals for your soil type.

In-ground lawn sprinkler systems help you make sure your lawn and gardens stay healthy and looking great all season long.
